The husband of US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi has been “violently assaulted” after a break-in at their California home.
Paul Pelosi, 82, was rushed to the hospital and is anticipated to recover fully, according to a spokesperson.
Unknown as to why the attack occurred, the suspect—who has not been named—is in police custody.
They allegedly used a hammer to break into the house and then yelled “where is Nancy?” at Mr. Pelosi.
When the event happened on Friday morning, Mrs. Pelosi was not at the San Francisco residence, but rather was in Washington.
A spokesman for the senior Democrat said, “The Speaker and her family are appreciative to the first responders and medical professionals involved, and urge privacy at this time.”
She was in Washington with her security detail at the time of the attack and is currently fundraising and campaigning with Democrats across the nation ahead of the midterm elections on November 8.
Uncertainty surrounds the attack’s precise circumstances and the intruder’s method of entry into the couple’s home.
The probe is being supported by the FBI and the US Capitol Police, which has a field office in California.
Additional protection for the families of congressional leaders is reportedly being considered by Capitol Police.
On Friday, Mr. McConnell tweeted that the attack on Mr. Pelosi left him feeling “horrified and appalled.”
President Joe Biden is “praying for Paul Pelosi and for Speaker Pelosi’s entire family,” according to a statement from the White House.
The top-ranking Democrat in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, said: “Paul Pelosi was the victim of a nefarious conduct. I hope he recovers quickly.”
