Nelson Mandela University in the Eastern Cape has introduced a new short course designed to help workers manage stress.
The course takes students through steps to navigate their way from a state of anxiety or panic to a feeling of calmness.
Speaking on Tuesday, psychiatrist Professor Zukiswa Zingela who developed the course noted that the short learning programme was developed after conducting research on how to best support healthcare workers during the COVID-19 pandemic, specifically in resource-limited settings.
According to Prof Zingela, the course teaches how to handle stress, anxiety, and intense emotions in stressful situations. It can be accessed online from home or work adding that the course, which takes only a few hours, will improve coping skills.
“I noticed that many people, especially health workers on the frontline during COVID-19, were struggling with mental health, while we trained to meet physical needs, we overlooked mental and psychological care.” says Zingela.
The program includes evidence-based cognitive and behavioral methods, combined with mindfulness and relaxation techniques.
One participant noted, “It’s helped us manage high-pressure situations. We can now recognize and reduce stress more effectively.”
The course also teaches skills to better prepare for stressful situations and master basic relaxation and mindfulness techniques.
Another participant shared, “Learning these techniques helped me cope with stress and anxiety. It allowed me to focus on my work and understand myself better.”
The program is now open for registration and available nationwide, both in-person and online.
