Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari on Friday reinstated that his administration will fulfil the five demands of the #EndSARS protesters.
“This government heard, this government listened and this government is committed to fulfilling the five demands of our youths, fully understanding that we all wish well for Nigeria,” Buhari said in his 2021 new year broadcast.
The president’s assurance is in sharp contrasts to comments made by The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed who said the Federal Government has met all five demands of #EndSARS protesters.
Speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting with members of the Broadcasting Organisation of Nigeria (BON) at Abuja in November, the minister said:
“As you can see, ladies and gentlemen we met the five demands.
“Some, like disbandment of SARS, were met immediately while we kick-started the process of meeting others that cannot be done with an immediate pronouncement.
“Despite this, the protest continued, and the demands kept expanding, until the protest was hijacked, leading to unprecedented violence characterized by killings, maiming, arson, looting etc.”
“The Federal Government was not only responsive but was also very responsible in its handling of the demands of the End SARS protesters” He claimed.
It is worthwhile to note that the administration of President Buhari has become notorious for making mutually contradictory claims.
Public commentators who are irked by the recurrent development note that it reeks more of incompetence than conspiracy.
