Super Eagles Interim Coach Austin Eguavoen says Tuesday’s victory over Egypt at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) was no surprise to him and his team.
Kelechi Iheanacho’s excellent first-half goal ensured Nigeria began their campaign on a good note as they recorded their first win at the tournament in Garoua.
Before the game, Nigerians were wary of the threat the Egyptians could pose alongside their influential skipper Mohammed Salah, as many predicted a tough AFCON opener for the Eagles.
However, the seven-time champions failed to live up to the hype after they produced an uninspiring show against the Eagles.
Reacting during a post-match conference, Eguavoen said:
“Pulling up a win against Egypt was a surprise to many people but that was not a surprise to us.
“We respected them and we put in all our best to secure the victory.
“This game is gone and we’ve forgotten about it and we will focus on our next game”.
Nigeria take on Sudan in their next game on Saturday, January 15, 2022.
The three-time champions are now two points clear of Sudan and Guinea Bissau in Group D after both teams played out a goalless draw.
