A suspended Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP), Drambi Vandi convicted for the murder of a lawyer, Mrs Omobolanle Raheem in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital has been sentenced to death by hanging.
Justice Ibironke Harrison of the Lagos State High Court, Tafawa Balewa Square annex on Monday held that the prosecution, the Lagos State Government, has proven the case against the convict beyond all reasonable doubt.
“The court finds the defendant guilty on one count of murder. You will be hanged by the neck till you are dead.” the judge held.
On January 16, the Lagos State Government arraigned Vandi before the court for shooting to death the 41-year-old pregnant lawyer.
Vandi had shot Mrs Raheem dead in the presence of her husband while returning from church on Christmas Day last year at a Police checkpoint in Ajah, Lagos.
The Suspended Police Officer was found guilty of the Christmas Day killing of Omobolanle Raheem.
The convict faced a one-count charge of murder contrary to Section 223 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
Though courts still hand death sentences, nobody has been executed since 1999 in Nigeria in implementation of execution order.
