In an effort to prevent a potential breakdown of law and order, the Kano State Government has implemented a strict curfew from dawn until dusk.
The tense situation was caused by the collation of results from the governorship and state assembly elections, which has generated significant tension and unrest among the populace.
In a statement issued on Monday morning, the state Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Muhammad Garba, announced the imposition of the curfew.
“The primary objective of the curfew is to prevent hoodlums and other miscreants from exploiting the already volatile situation and causing further chaos and disruption,” the commissioner said.
“This is a necessary measure to ensure the safety and security of all citizens in the state during this challenging time.”
The commissioner urged all residents of the state to remain indoors during the curfew hours and warned that security agencies would not hesitate to take stern action against anyone or any group found violating the curfew.
What we know about Kano guber polls
In a major upset, Abba Yusuf of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) emerged victorious in the Kano governorship election, defeating Yusuf Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The stunning upset is significant, as Gawuna serves as the current deputy governor of the state and was widely regarded as Abdullahi Ganduje’s preferred candidate. Meanwhile, Abba Yusuf enjoyed strong support from Rabiu Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano state and presidential candidate of the NNPP.
After collating results across all 44 LGAs in the state, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) officially declared Yusuf as the winner.
Ahmad Dokko Ibrahim, the returning officer, announced that Yusuf garnered an impressive 1,019,602 votes, while Gawuna trailed behind with 890,705 votes.
