Team Nigeria ended the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games as the 74th best country in the competition won by the United States.
Nigeria won one silver medal in wrestling and one bronze medal in the long jump to be ranked 8th best team from the continent.
Africa’s number one team, Kenya finished the competition with four gold medals, four silvers, and two bronze medals, followed by South Africa (one gold, two silver), Egypt (one gold, one silver, four bronze), Tunisia (one gold, one silver), Morocco (one gold) placed second, third, fourth and fifth respectively.
The United States emerged champions for the third successive Olympics after they piped China to the post to land 39 gold medals.
Host country, Japan were ranked third after amassing 58 medals, including 27 gold, while Team Great Britain finished fourth on 65 medals, made up of 22 gold, 21 silvers, and 22 bronzes.
The delayed Tokyo Olympics which began on July 23 and ended on Sunday August 8, had 93 of the 206 participating teams making it to the medals table, including 13 of the 54 from Africa.
Recall that Nigeria’s participation at the quadrennial tournament was met with series of avoidable crisis, including the expulsion of 10 athletes over anti-doping violations.
