As Nigeria celebrates 25 years of uninterrupted democracy, President Bola Tinubu has underscored the nation’s unwavering commitment to democratic governance.
Addressing Nigerians in a nationwide broadcast as part of activities commemorating June 12 Democracy Day, the President emphasized the importance of sustaining the democratic principles for which many have sacrificed, while acknowledging the economic challenges and reforms needed for Nigeria’s progress.
It is worth noting that June 12 Democracy Day in Nigeria is a national public holiday celebrated annually to commemorate the restoration of democracy in the country.
This date marks the anniversary of the presidential election held on June 12, 1993, which is widely considered to be the freest and fairest election in Nigeria’s history with Moshood Abiola emerging victorious.
The election was annulled by the then military government, which led to widespread protests and a prolonged struggle for democracy.
The day wasn’t always Democracy Day. In 2018, it was changed from May 29th to June 12th to honour Abiola and symbolize the true return of democracy to Nigeria.
Here are the key highlights from his speech
Endurance of Democracy
President Tinubu emphasized the importance of continuing the democratic path Nigeria has chosen. “As Nigerians, we must remind ourselves that no matter how complicated democracy may be, it is the best form of governance in the long run”. He acknowledged the ongoing challenges but stressed the necessity of preserving democracy against those who seek to undermine it.
Battle Against Despotism
He highlighted the current struggle against authoritarian forces: “This is the great battle of our day and the major reason we specially celebrate this Democracy day”. He called for vigilance to prevent the resurgence of dictatorship, stating, “The real test is whether we shall lower our guards as the shadow of despotism and its evident physical danger fade”.
Economic Reforms and Hardships
Addressing the economic difficulties faced by Nigerians, Tinubu spoke about necessary reforms: “Our economy has been in desperate need of reform for decades… There is no doubt the reforms have occasioned hardship”. He pledged to continue listening to the people and work towards economic opportunities for all, highlighting the negotiation for a new national minimum wage as an example of his administration’s commitment to cooperative solutions.
Commitment to Democracy and Governance
Tinubu reaffirmed his dedication to democratic principles: “I vow to do my utmost best to protect your rights, freedoms, and liberties as citizens of Nigeria”. He pledged to cement democracy as Nigeria’s way of life, recognizing the sacrifices of those who fought for it and his own role in its preservation.
Vision for Nigeria’s Future
He concluded with an optimistic vision, invoking the words of Franklin Roosevelt: “There are many ways of going forward. But only one way of standing still!”. He urged Nigerians to continue moving forward, emphasizing that the path to national greatness lies in taking the right, albeit challenging, road.
Call for Unity and Progress
President Tinubu called for unity in pursuing progress: “Let us board this progressive train together. Together, let us move Nigeria forward”. He urged Nigerians to keep the spirit of democracy alive for future generations and concluded with a blessing for the nation and a wish for a Happy Democracy Day.
