Nigeria’s electoral management body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced a shift in the date for the conduct of governorship and state assembly elections earlier slated to hold on Saturday, March 11, 2023.
“The elections were postponed to allow one more week for preparations.
“We should be able to get everything in order before March 18″, a source who pleaded anonymity because he is not authorised to speak on the matter told our reporter.
The commission’s executives had after a meeting on Wednesday evening decided to make adjustment with the date, citing logistics and transportation concerns.
INEC had applied for a reconfiguration of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), a request the Abuja Court of Appeal granted on Wednesday.
The opposition had alleged that this will tamper with evidence of manipulations in the presidential election of Feb. 25 which produced the governing APC’s Bola Tinubu as winner.
INEC said the reconfiguration of the BVAS machines is a necessity for the governorship and State Assembly elections to hold.
The opposition has applied to inspect sensitive materials used in the conduct of the presidential elections, including BVAS which they said was rigged in favour of Tinubu.
