The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has taken action in response to the ongoing trial of Alhassan Ado Doguwa, the House of Representatives majority leader.
INEC has withheld Mr Doguwa’s return certificate, citing the “duress” that influenced his declaration as the winner of the February 25 federal parliamentary election.
The commission has also withdrawn his certificate of return.
Mr Doguwa is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and represents the Doguwa/Tudun Wada federal constituency of Kano.
He is facing trial on multiple charges, including conspiracy, culpable homicide, causing grievous hurt, arson, inciting public disturbance, and unlawful possession of firearms.
On Monday, the Kano Division of the Federal High Court granted Mr Doguwa bail in the sum of N500 million in a case of alleged murder.
The charges stem from his alleged involvement in the murder of an individual, as well as the burning of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) office in Tudun Wada Dankadai, and other offenses.
The trial has been adjourned until March 20 for a hearing.
It is unclear at this time what the future holds for Mr Doguwa’s political career.
The decision by INEC to withhold his certificate of return is a significant blow, as it prevents him from participating in the activities of the House of Representatives.
Also, the charges against him are serious and could result in a prison sentence if he is found guilty
