At least two persons have been reported dead, while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries when a moving train rammed into a BRT passenger bus in the Ikeja area of Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial capital.
Authorities have confirmed the Thursday morning accident which occured at the PWD bus stop
The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) spokesman, Adebayo Taofiq while giving details, stated that the bus officials of Lagos State Government were being conveyed in the vehicle when the unfortunate incident took place.
“Two adult females staff of the State Government dead and several injured evacuated”, a spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency in Lagos, Ibrahim Farinloye added.
According to Farinloye, “The State Government staff bus was trying to cross the PWD/Sogunle rail crossing while the train coming into Lagos from Abeokuta trapped the bus on its rail.”
Emergency workers have since arrived the venue to evacuate the injured victims.
Train accidents have become recurrent in recent times in Nigeria with an increasing deficit in functional transportation system.
In December last year, an Abuja-bound train crushed a woman to death along the Kubwa rail tracks in the nation’s capital.
