The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi has challenged the notion that the victory of the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, is God’s will.
Speaking in an interview on Arise TV’s ‘The Morning Show,’ Obi disagreed with prominent Nigerians and clerics who claimed that the outcome of the presidential election was God’s plan, despite the numerous electoral infractions that occurred.
According to him, “accepting wrongdoing as God’s will is Nigeria’s major problem and a form of using God’s name in vain.“
He stressed the importance of following the laws that govern elections, stating that “if these laws were followed, the electoral process would have been concluded within hours.“
The former Anambra State governor also criticized those who use God’s name to justify stealing public funds, rigging elections, or engaging in other forms of corruption.
“It is not God’s wish that you go and rob a train and make money and start sharing it… This is what is killing the country. People come here, take public money and then go and give it to people in the Church…and they say it’s God’s wish…that is what we’re fighting. That’s what we want to stop,” he said.
“It is not God’s will for 133 million Nigerians to live in poverty, for 95 million Nigerians to be in destitution, or for the country to have collapsed healthcare and a high rate of infant mortality.”
Obi therefore called for “an end to the misuse of God’s name, urging Nigerians to strive for a brighter future by doing the right thing and building a better country for future generations.”
