Policemen engaging external forces to lobby for promotion on their behalf will be dealt with, a warning from the Inspector General of Nigeria Police, Kayode Egbetokun says.
The lead security agency in the West African nation has struggled to overcome allegations of corruption, bribery and extra-judicial killings amidst human rights low rating.
Heritage Times HT reports that apart from bribe-for-promotion, the Nigeria Police suffering acute under-funding and lack of equipment is also accused of failing to curtail banditry and growing kidnapping in the 200 million population.
The police chief who spoke in the capital Abuja, at the decoration ceremony of a new Deputy Inspector General of Police and 26 other senior police officers, cautioned that the force is a disciplined organization where promotion is based strictly on merit and not through lobbying by influential persons.
Egbetokun while tasking the newly promoted officers to always maintain professionalism, urged all officers and men of the force to remain committed to their duties in order to benefit from the transparent promotion exercise under his administration.
11 Commissioners of Police were promoted to the rank of Assistant Inspectors General of Police, while 15 Deputy Commissioners of Police were promoted to the rank of Commissioner of Police.
