Police forces on Thursday deployed teargas on a group of unarmed demonstrators near the Federal Secretariat – the headquarters of Nigerian civil servants, in Abuja, the nation’s capital.
Heritage Times HT reports that young Nigerians initiated a nationwide protest today against economic hardship and rising inflation.
The protests, called ’10 Days of Rage,’ are trending under the hashtag #EndBadGovernance.
As the protests intensify, there is a significant police presence across the country.
On Wednesday, a high court in the federal capital territory (FCT) restricted protests to the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja.
Presiding Judge Sylvanus Oriji issued the order in response to an ex parte motion filed by Nyesom Wike, the minister of the FCT.
Nyesom Wike sued Omoyele Sowore, Damilare Adenola, Adama Ukpabi, Tosin Harsogba, and unnamed individuals as the first to fifth defendants.
However, on Thursday morning, some protesters confronted police officers, adamant that they would not be confined to the stadium.
