Gunmen suspected to be members of Boko Haram terrorist group on Saturday stormed Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State, North East Nigeria, as the country votes in parliamentary and presidential elections, disrupting voting exercise and causing electorates to scamper for safety.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Abdu Umar who confirmed the incident, added that at least five voters were injured as the attackers fired several gunshots from the top of Mandara Mountains,
The injured voters he said, comprise of two females and three males.
“Efforts of the military within the area of responsibility helped in chasing the terrorists, forcing them to flee due to the superior firepower,” he said.
According to the police boss, normalcy has since been restored as the voting exercise continued while the victims were referred to hospital for treatment.
Civil society organisations have applauded the turnout of voters in the presidential and National Assembly elections in Borno metropolis.
The Chairman Network of Civil Society Organisations in Borno (NECSOB) Bulama Abiso, who led a team of observers for the election, described the turnout as “encouraging”.
