President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has ordered the immediate suspension of the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr Godwin Emefiele, from office.
He directed that the Deputy Governor in charge of the Operations Directorate assume duty as the acting governor of the apex bank pending the conclusion of investigation and reform.
This was contained in a statement on Friday signed by Willie Bassey, a Director in the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
He said, “This is sequel to the ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy.
“Mr Emefiele has been directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate), who will act as the Central Bank Governor pending the conclusion of investigation and the reforms.”
During the presidential campaigns, Tinubu then candidate of All Progressives Congress (APC) had accused the CBN governor of deliberately rolling out a Naira note redesign policy, which led to cash crunch nationwide to frustrate his presidential bid.
Pundits had predicted Emefiele’s sack following the victory of Tinubu at the polls.
He was sworn-in as Nigeria’s 16th President May 29.
