The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has in a public health advisory issued today, confirmed the outbreak of diphtheria in the country.
According to the NCDC, the disease which affects the nose, throat, and skin, has already caused the deaths of at least 25 people in Kano State.
It noted that the outbreak has also spread to Osun and Yobe States, and the organization is closely monitoring the situation.
Diphtheria is caused by the bacterium Corynebacterium diphtheriae and spreads easily through direct contact with infected individuals, droplets from coughing or sneezing, and contact with contaminated clothing or objects.
Those most at risk of contracting the disease are children and adults who have not been fully vaccinated, people living in crowded environments and poor sanitation, and healthcare workers.
Symptoms of diphtheria include fever, sore throat, and neck swelling.
In severe cases, a thick grey or white patch can appear on the tonsils and/or at the back of the throat, along with difficulty breathing.
While assuring that it is working with state health ministries and partners to enhance surveillance and response efforts, the NCDC urged parents to ensure that their children are fully vaccinated against diphtheria and for healthcare workers to be vigilant for symptoms of the disease.
The advisory further urged anyone with signs and symptoms of diphtheria to isolate themselves and notify the local government area, state disease surveillance officer, or the NCDC through its toll-free line.
