On Thursday, the Kano State House of Assembly passed the proposed Kano State Emirate Council Law 2024, effectively removing Alh. Aminu Ado Bayero from his position as Emir of Kano.
In a significant move, the law recognized former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Lamido Sanusi, as the new Emir of Kano.
Following this decision, Sanusi’s portrait now graces the walls of the Coronation Hall of Government House, Kano, replacing that of Aminu Bayero. The swift change in decor symbolizes Sanusi’s return to the palace.
The stage was set for Sanusi’s official reinstatement with the amendment of the Kano State Emirates Council Law 2024 (1441 A.H) by the House of Assembly, culminating in the bill’s successful passage after the third reading on Thursday.
“All traditional office holders and title holders elevated or appointed to an office created under the repealed Principal law, dated 5th December 2019 shall revert to their position where such positions previously existed under recognised custom and traditions prior to the enactment of the repealed Principal Law dated 5th December 2019.
“The Commissioner responsible for Local Government shall oversee all transitional arrangements including how best to deal with assets and liabilities of the abolished emirates and new structure created under the repealed Principal Law dated 5th December 2019,” said the amended law 2024.
According to the new law, “The governor shall take all necessary measures to restore the status of the Kano Emirate System to its positions prior to the enactment of the repealed Principal Law dated 5th December 2019.”
Governor Abba Yusuf is anticipated to sign the proposed amendment law today before making any formal announcements.
It was reported that Aminu Bayero fled the palace on Wednesday, May 22, heading to Ijebu and is currently in Ilorin.
Sources indicate that Sanusi’s appointment as the Emir of Kano by the Abba Yusuf administration has already been documented.
Sanusi initially became emir during Kwankwaso’s final term as governor. He was later dethroned by outgoing Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, who had been the deputy governor at the time Sanusi was installed.
Sanusi, the 14th Emir of Kano, was removed from his position on March 9, 2020, and exiled to Loko, a remote area in Nasarawa State. His tenure saw the expenses of the Kano emirate being investigated.
During Ganduje’s administration, four additional emirates were established, creating Bichi, Karaye, Rano, Gaya, and Kano as First Class Emirates.
However, today the current state Assembly “abolished” all the new emirates created by former governor Ganduje.
Governor Abba Yusuf has not yet made an official announcement at the time of this report.
