Nigeria’s U17 women’s national team, the Flamingos on Friday October 21, 2022 qualified for the semi-final of the ongoing FIFA Women’s U-17 World Cup taking place in India, after beating their USA counterpart 4-3 on penalties after regulation time ended 1-1.
Both teams gave their all with the Flamingos holding on during the encounter despite the superior tactical play by the Americans.
It is Nigeria’s first appearance in the semi-final of the competition.
Also, no African women team has ever attained such heights.
Talking about how the regulation time play panned out, the Nigerian team drew the first blood through O. J. Edafe in the 26th minute after converting a penalty awarded to Nigeria.
USA equalised in the 40th minute through A. M. Villarreal, after her shot was deflected into the Nigerian goal.
Nigeria will play face either Tanzania or Colombia in the semis.
