Mr Lekan, the prime suspect in the killing of a Central Bank of Nigeria official, Kehinde and his wife Bukola Fatinoye has escaped from the custody of Ogun State Police Command, a source has revealed.
The couple were killed in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital on new year day at their home upon their arrival from the traditional cross over church service.
The killers trailed the couple to their home and murdered them in gruesome manner, setting their bodies on fire and took away their son who was found dead days later.
Though the police authorities are yet to officially react to the escape of Lekan, reliable sources told our reporter that he escaped from police custody at Ibara Police Divisional Headquarters, following his arrest on Tuesday.
The source said Lekan at the point of giving the police authorities his statement slumped and feigned to be almost lifeless. Unknown to the officers, it was a ploy to escape lawful custody.
He was said to have been rushed to a police clinic at Zone II in an effort to administer medication and “revive” him to assist the police in their investigation.
While the revival effort was ongoing, the suspected killer however suddenly woke up and took to his heels, escaping from the clinic.
Efforts to bring him back to custody has proven abortive, the source added.
Lekan who was the personal driver to Mrs Fatinoye, a staff of Federal University of Agriculture (FUNAAB) was well known in the school community.
His arrest came after another suspect who was a house help to the Fatinoyes was taken into custody.
A family source says Lekan was taken into custody at Ibara Police Station after the house help, who also escaped assassination by the assailants, identified him as one of the killers at the scene on new year day.
Police have intensified efforts to re-arrest Lekan by releasing a ‘wanted’ person message carrying Lekan’s picture since in Thursday, but without any police insignia.
The message read, “Wanted! Wanted!! Wanted!!! This is the guy suspected to have been part of the culprits that murdered a couple in Abeokuta on New Year’s Eve. His name is Lekan. He is currently at large and has been declared wanted by the Police. Anyone who knows or sees him should contact the nearest police station. Kindly share.”
