Tajudeen Abbas, the favoured candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has secured the position of Speaker in the House of Representatives.
Following a roll call of the members-elect, Abbas emerged victorious with an impressive tally of 353 votes out of the 359 members who participated in the inauguration of the 10th National Assembly.
A significant majority of the members-elect openly expressed their support for Abbas, solidifying his position as the preferred choice.
The race for Speaker featured three contenders, with the requirement of a simple majority to secure victory.
Having surpassed the winning margin in the election, Abbas convincingly defeated his opponents: outgoing Deputy Speaker Ahmed Wase and Sani Jaji, who both garnered three votes each.
A seasoned politician, Abbas was initially elected to the House in 2011. He now assumes the esteemed role, succeeding Femi Gbajabiamila.
