Terrorists on Thursday evening reportedly engaged the Nigerian military in a gun duel at a checkpoint in Zuma Rock Madalla, along the Kaduna-Abuja highway.
There are indications that the terrorists attacked the military checkpoint in large numbers, shooting sporadically.
It is not yet clear if there were any casualties as at the time of writing this report.
According to several sources, the incident led to a gridlock on the highway.
The sources added that Nigerian troops deployed from Zuma barracks immediately faced the attackers and subsequently dispersed them after they initially moved along the Abuja-Kaduna highway to cause panic.
An eyewitness told Channels Television that the attack started at about 8pm local time.
The police and military authorities were not immediately available to respond to the incident.
This latest attack on a military installation comes days after bandits attacked a unit of the presidential brigade guards, killing at least three soldiers around Bwari area, located within the Federal Capital Territory.
The Defence headquarters informed yesterday that up to 30 terrorists suffered casualties as the guards took intense battle to the attackers in nearby bush.
