Plans are underway to establish Nigeria’s first university dedicated exclusively to artificial intelligence (AI) in Epe, Lagos, marking a significant milestone for the continent’s technological advancement.
The institution aims to equip Nigerian youth with advanced AI expertise, positioning the country as a competitive force in the global AI landscape. By tackling unemployment and fostering innovation, it seeks to transform Africa into a hub of technological breakthroughs.
The name “Wini Institution” draws inspiration from the world’s first AI-focused university in Qatar, a renowned establishment that has attracted leading scholars and innovators from global powerhouses such as China, India, the US, and Europe.
Nigeria’s journey towards establishing Wini University began in 2016, when a group of visionaries from Boston and Nigeria came together with a shared ambition. Years of planning, securing expressions of interest from the National Universities Commission (NUC), and rallying support have finally brought the dream closer to reality.
The Wini Group envisions the university as a game-changer for African education, laying the groundwork for the continent’s first AI-powered Silicon Valley. It aims to nurture a vibrant ecosystem of talented academics and students committed to leveraging AI and quantum computing to drive development both in Africa and globally.
The university’s mission is to cultivate a generation of African innovators and active contributors in the AI space, breaking away from the traditional role of being mere observers in the global tech market.
Once completed, Wini University will become Africa’s first academic institution solely dedicated to artificial intelligence. Beyond academics, it represents a bold initiative to position Lagos as Africa’s Silicon Valley—a nexus for innovation and technology to tackle practical challenges.
In 2013, Russian President Vladimir Putin famously remarked that the nation leading in AI would become the next global superpower. A decade later, AI has emerged as the backbone of industries and human progress worldwide, validating his prediction.
The proposed university will empower young Nigerians to develop groundbreaking ideas capable of reshaping economies and industries. By offering cutting-edge training in blockchain, cloud computing, generative AI, OpenAI, data science, and machine learning, the institution will prepare students for leadership roles in the rapidly evolving global AI market.
