The Warri-Itakpe train service came to a halt yesterday after a train derailed on the Km30 Ajaokuta-Itakpe section of the track.
148 passengers and 30 crew members were on board at the time of the incident, which occurred around 12:30 PM on Sunday, January 22, 2023.
There were no fatalities or injuries reported, and all passengers and crew members were safely evacuated and transported to their destinations.
Coordinator of the Warri-Itakpe Train Service, Sanni Abdulganiyu, confirmed the derailment in a statement, saying: “We were immediately alerted and security personnel comprising of the Army, Police, NSCDC, and community vigilantes were deployed to the scene with the assistance of the local government chairman.
“The cause of the derailment is not yet determined, but an investigation is underway.”
This is the second incident to occur on the route in the past two weeks, as passengers were previously abducted from the Tom Ikimi/Ekehen station at Igueben, Edo State.
As a result, service along the corridor have been suspended indefinitely.
Commuters are advised to make alternative arrangements and monitor local media for updates on the situation.
