A building collapsed in the Ademola Adetokunbo Crescent area of Wuse 2, Abuja on Wednesday, resulting in the death of two artisans while four others were seriously injured.
The unfortunate incident occurred when the fence of an adjoining building collapsed on the workers, who were reportedly working on a building that was still at the foundation level.
According to reports, the artisans had encroached on the fence of the adjacent building, leading to its collapse.
Confirming the incident, Director-General of the Federal Capital Territory FCT Emergency Management Agency FEMA, Alhaji Abbas Idriss, revealed that the injured had been rushed to the hospital for treatment.
“Between 10 am and 11 am, we received a distress call that there was a building collapse in Wuse 2, and we had to draft our rescue team to quickly go there,” said Idriss.
“In getting there, they discovered that it was a wall that fell on the artisans working around the area. So far, six people were removed from the rubble, and two were fatally injured while four are currently receiving treatment at the hospital. Two people died,” he added.
Idriss went on to note that the incident was not caused by the use of substandard materials.
Speaking on measures to prevent similar incidents, Idriss noted that his agency would continue to sensitize the public and work with relevant stakeholders.
“The best we can do is to continue to sensitize the people and engage other relevant stakeholders who give approvals, monitor developments and so on,” he said.
