A Nigerian national resident in South Africa, Onyehani Dumkele, has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a Pretoria Magistrate Court for the murder of a 23-year-old artist, Shaun Douglas Chabalala.
The court also handed him additional 15-year and 12-month separate sentences.
South African news platform, MSN says Dumkele killed the late up-coming artist in May 2018 after he lured him and his friend, Given Mzamane, into an apartment in East Pretoria through a fake luxury camera advertisement.
Chabalala and Mzamane were led into an ambush in Dumkele’s apartment with about R14,000 cash on them, South African Police Service, Captain Daniel Mavimbela stated.
“Upon entering the apartment, the victims were attacked by a group of men, and Chabalala succumbed to injuries and was declared dead on the scene,” he said.
“Mzamane testified that he forced his way out of the door and managed to escape, however, it was not before he had witnessed two men, who had participated in the robbery and attack on himself and Chabalala, lift Chabalala and throw him out of the window from the same apartment.”
Dumkele, who was arrested 15 months after the murder, blamed the act on his friend, Obienna Ofoegbuliwe, another Nigerian who is currently on the run after he was bailed with R 3000 following his initial arrest.
