A Nigerian, Azania Sienna Omo-Agege, has been appointed interim African Boxing Confederation President.
Omo-Agege who is the Vice President of Nigeria Boxing Federation replaces Betrand Mendouga who has been removed from office after spending only a year in the office.
Meanwhile, Nigeria team in the just concluded African Boxing Championship in Yaounde, Cameroon, made the country proud by winning four medals (1gold, 1 Silver and 2 bronze), thus placing Nigeria on the medal table.
Nigeria presented six boxers at the competition.
Adams Olaore who fought in the men’s heavyweight category, won the gold medal for Nigeria while Patricia Mbata accounted for the Silver medal in the women’s middleweight class.
The two bronze medals were won by Dolapo Omole (featherweight) and Adeola Oyesiji (Light-Flyweight) in the women’s category respectively.
Nigeria, Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire, Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Cape Verde, Cameroon, Congo, Gabon, DR Congo and Guinea Equatorial, South Africa, Mozambique, Zambia, Seychelles, Mauritius and all the North African countries except Egypt participated in the competition.
The tournament recorded 264 boxers who registered in the different categories.
Team Nigeria will resume camp next week for continuation of training in preparation for Africa Olympic qualifiers scheduled for Dakar, Senegal, between September 5 and 16, 2023.
