A Nigerian footballer, Adeyemi Adewale, has been confirmed dead after collapsing while playing a football match at a school in Osun State, Southwest Nigeria.
The 29-year-old Adewale was representing a local football team – Ilesa West, in the final of a grassroots tournament titled the: ‘Adeleke Memorial Cup’.
Efforts to save him proved futile as he was rushed to the Osun State University Teaching Hospital, where doctors confirmed him dead on arrival.
The spokesperson for the Osun Police Command, Yemisi Opalola, also confirmed the incident in a statement.
Opalola said investigations have already been launched into the circumstances surrounding his death.
“During the Adeleke Memorial Cup final match at Ataoja School of Science, one Adeyemi Adewale, male, aged 29, a player for the Ilesa West football team, slumped on the pitch.
“He was rushed to the Osun State University Teaching Hospital, where he was later confirmed dead by a doctor,” the statement read.
The remains of the deceased have since been deposited at the teaching hospital’s morgue.
