The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has announced that Nigerians will start using the new three-in-one identity card services in August this year.
Heritage Times HT reports that on April 5, 2024, NIMC revealed that it had introduced a new card with integrated payment capabilities and social service features in collaboration with the Central Bank of Nigeria and the Nigeria Inter-bank Settlement System. This identity solution is designed to facilitate payment for various social and financial services.
A NIMC official, during an interview emphasized that the commission has been diligently working towards this goal, with plans set to launch in the coming months.
The unnamed official noted that the testing and deployment stages have already begun.
“We initially aimed for a July launch, though there have been some delays. We remain optimistic about rolling it out between July and August. We will keep the public informed of any changes,” the source stated.
“Deploying new technology involves substantial work, including configuring the card, enabling outlets, and setting up the wallet. Testing is currently in progress.
“Deployment is underway, with the necessary portal for accessing the service being established. It needs to be scalable, and that work is ongoing.
“Integrations required by all banks to enable the card are in progress. We have set our target and are working hard to ensure we meet it.”
