Nigeria’s only representative in the ongoing African Football League, Enyimba, Sunday night lost 0-1 to visiting Wydad Athletic Club of Morocco inside Godswill Akpabio International Stadium Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.
From the blast of whistle, the away side Wydad Casablanca took control of the quarter-final contest.
Then Captain Yayha Jabrane scored the winning goal for the Red Castle from the spot eight minutes before the break.
Wasted Effort
Enyimba fought hard to get back into the game but couldn’t break down the opposition defence.
Instead, the Nigerian side were reduced to 10-men when Alalibo Somiari was sent off late in the game.
The result leaves Enyimba, former CAF Champions League double winners on a difficult path ahead of the return leg fixture on Wednesday, October 25, 2023, in Casablanca.
Other Results
The result of other last eight matches shows that Tanzania’s Simba SC played out a 2-2 draw against Al Ahly of Egypt.
In Angola, Petro Luanda lost 0-2 to visiting Sundowns of South Africa, just as TP Mazembe of DR Congo had 1-0 upperhand over Esperance of Tunisia.
The winners of the quarter final stage will proceed to the semi-final with the overall winners of the competition grabbing unprecedented $3 million in prize money.
