Nigeria’s first ever Olympics gold winner, Chioma Ajunwa-Oparah, is currently a happy woman, after she was promoted to the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police.
Ajunwa-Oparah has been an employee of the Nigeria Police over the years.
Excitement Galore
Excited over her latest promotion, the 52-year-old former athlete said, “I am happy and grateful to God to have achieved this height in the Nigeria Police Force despite all the odds. I am already at the peak of the rankings, and I thank my God and all my bosses,”
Ajunwa’s Track Record
In far back 1996 during the Atlanta Olympics, Ajunwa became the first black African woman to win gold medal in a field event at the prestigious and most glamorous global sporting fiesta.
She is also the only woman to compete at both the FIFA Women’s World Cup as a footballer and the Olympics as a track and field athlete.
Ajunwa performed as a track and field athlete and specialised in the 100m, 200m, and long jump.
She competed at the 1990 Commonwealth Games, winning a bronze medal in the 4 x 100-metre relay, and competed at the African Championships in 1989 and the All Africa Games in 1991, where she won gold medals in the long jump.
