Few days after bowing to defeat in Congo Brazzaville, Nigeria’s only representative in the ongoing CAF Confederation Cup, Rivers United, have regained their winning strength as they thrashed Ivorien side ASEC Mimosa 3-0 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom.
The second group B game saw the Nigerian club step up their game against ASEC and they won emphatically to be back to reckoning.
They will now visit Motema Pembe of DR Congo on February 26 for their Match Day 3 fixture in the competition’s group phase.
Also, during the weekend of many matches, South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns and Raja Casablanca of Morocco were the biggest winners in the CAF Champions League.
In Benghazi, Sudanese heavyweights – Al-Merreikh held Egyptian powerhouse Zamalek played a goalless draw in Group D.
It was followed by Sundowns that defeated Coton Sports of Cameroon 3-1 in Garoua to make it two wins from two in Group B.
Then, an Algerian side JS Kabylie readjusted from last week’s goalless draw at Petro Atletico de Luanda to beat defending champions Wydad Casablanca of Morocco 1-0 in Group A.
For 10-man Vipers of Uganda, they held Horoya of Guinea to a goalless draw in Group C followed by Al Hilal Omdurman of Sudan defeating Egyptian neighbours Al Ahly 1-0 in Group B.
In group C, Raja Casablanca trounced Tanzanian giants Simba SC, to maintain Moroccans’ 100% start, just as Petro Atletico de Luanda got their first three points on board with victory at DR Congo side AS Vita in group A wrap.
Esperance of Tunisia rounded the weekend with a 1-0 at Algerian outfit Belouizdad.
