For the sixth time consecutively, Nigeria’s Super Falcons have lost in both competitive and friendly matches between July 2022 and February 2023.
The latest of these defeats on former African champions came on Wednesday night, after they suffered a 0-1 loss to Mexico, host of an ongoing pre-World Cup tournament officially known as, ‘Revolution Cup.’
The competition is part of preparations ahead of this year’s Women’s World Cup to be co-staged by Australia and New Zealand between July 20 and August 20.
The Super Falcons will now have another opportunity to redeem their image in their second game against Colombia on Saturday February 18 2023, during the Revolution Cup soccer event.
The first match of the tournament between Costa Rica and Colombia ended goalless, leaving Nigeria rooted at the bottom of the table.
The Nigerian side have battled to recover since they lost Women African Cup of Nations (WAFCON) crown in Morocco.
Since they struggled to pick a World Cup ticket, the Super Falcons team led by coach Randy Waldrum, were beaten by South Africa, in the semi-final of WAFCON.
They also lost to Zambia in the third place game of that competition.
Thereafter, the same Nigerian women side have lost to USA and Japan in friendly Games.
After the ongoing four-nation tournament event in Mexico, the Super Falcons will have big mountain to climb in their group B World Cup pairing against co-host Australia, Canada and Republic of Ireland.
Their first match at the mundial, will be against Australia at Sydney on July 21, a day after opening formalities.
