President Bola Tinubu is scheduled to travel from Abuja to Accra, Ghana, on Monday to attend the inauguration of John Mahama as president-elect on January 7.
A statement from Tinubu’s spokesman, Bayo Onanuga on Sunday confirmed the trip.
Mahama, who previously served as Ghana’s 12th president from 2011 to 2017, was re-elected in December 2024. He is set to succeed President Nana Akuffo-Addo, whose term concludes in 2025.
Tinubu’s visit is in response to an invitation from Mahama, who had visited the Nigerian leader in December. The two leaders share a close personal relationship, reflective of the strong bilateral ties between Nigeria and Ghana.
As Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, President Tinubu will join other prominent African leaders at the historic inauguration ceremony. He will be accompanied by Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, and other senior officials.
