The Group managing director (GMD) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mele Kyari has disclosed plans of the corporation to provide free conversion services that will enable automobiles switch from premium motor spirit (PMS) to autogas.
Kyari made the disclosure while speaking to journalists at the inauguration of the National Gas Expansion Programme (NGEP) on Tuesday in Abuja, presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.
“There is also our primary role to provide the conversion kits for our vehicles until the private sector can come in. We see this just as as a service to Nigerians and as a business to the corporation,” he said.
“You bring your car to a location and then we fit in the things you need to call the gas and also to receive the gas into your car.
“All the 1 million cars that we promised will be done through a structure that the ministry of petroleum resources will put in place to ensure that any Nigerian who has to convert his car will get it done for free.”
The GMD who explained that the conversion service will be available in NNPC retail stations nationwide said states that already have autogas service stations are Abuja, Kaduna, Kano, Kogi, Kwara, Ogun, Ondo, Oyo, Lagos, Edo, Delta, Rivers and Bayelsa.
He also noted that the development would consolidate on government‘s efforts to create jobs and expand its natural gas footprint.
“ongoing gas infrastructure projects including the OB3 gas pipeline connecting east and west, the ELPS II which is expected to boost supply to the western corridor and the AKK gas pipeline that will supply gas to Abuja, the federal capital territory (FCT), Kaduna and Kano states.”
It is worthwhile to note that the price of Gas comes at almost about half the price of petrol.
Thus, the use of autogas is an economic alternative to petrol whose price suffers persistent hikes.
