After a richly successful few months with club and country, Chelsea and Italy combative midfielder, Jorginho believes he stands a chance of being named the best player this year.
The Brazil-born player maker played a vital role in Italy’s title triumph at the just concluded UEFA European Championship as well as Chelsea’s Champions League win last season.
It is on this premise that the former Napoli star declared himself as a worthy contender in the race for this year’s Ballon d’Or.
Speaking in the wake of the Azzurri’s penalty shootout win over England at Wembley, the midfielder feels he is deserving of a shot at the prestigious award.
“We all have dreams,” Jorginho told SporTV. “But, I’ll be honest, it depends on the criteria that the decision is based on.
“If we’re talking about talent then I know I’m not the best in the world. But if it’s going on titles, then nobody has won more than I have this season.
“How could I compare myself to [Lionel] Messi, Neymar or Cristiano Ronaldo? They’ve got completely different characteristics to me.
“But, I repeat, it depends on the criteria.”
The award ceremony was canceled last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic – when Robert Lewandowski was the presumed frontrunner for the prestigious award following his blistering form for Bayern Munich.
Meanwhile, the award is set to return this year with familiar faces in the race for the prize.
