Brazilian and former Olympique Lyon defender, Marcelo Antônio Guedes Filho was permanently removed from the Lyon squad for farting in the locker room.
L’Equipe claim, via GFFN, that the 34-year-old loudly farted in the dressing room after the calamitous match. To make matters worse, he is also alleged to have laughed about it. The incident is said to have enraged club legend and Sporting Director Juninho. Marcelo was initially banished to the reserves, before having his contract cancelled in January.
The 34-year-old defender joined Lyon in 2017 from Turkish side, Besiktas on a three year contract for a transfer fee of €7 million, with €500,000 in incentives.
The specific incident occurred following a 3-0 defeat away at Angers – a team Lyon will have expected to beat – in which Marcelo scored an own goal and was demoted to the reserves team.
He was said to have acted in an inappropriate manner towards a team-mate then. Latest reports confirmed that Marcelo farted in the dressing room and laughed about it without any remorse.
Fellow Brazilian and Lyon Sporting director, Juninho, who was not particularly close to his compatriot, reacted to this by deciding, along with manager Peter Bosz, to remove him from the squad.
Lyon released a statement after the loss : “The inappropriate behavior of Marcelo in the locker room after the match in Angers justifies the decision to demote him, which was taken unanimously by Olympique Lyonnais’ management team.
“The player was briefed on this decision yesterday afternoon by Juninho and Peter Bosz.
“Olympique Lyonnais’ management reiterates that all of its players must demonstrate an unwavering mindset and a commitment to quickly return to recording results in line with the club’s ambitions.”
Marcelo’s contract was later terminated at the end of January 2022, and he has since joined relegation strugglers Bordeaux.
