The governor of Ondo State and flag-bearer of the All Progressives Congress, Rotimi Akeredolu has assured that Saturday’s gubernatorial election will be peaceful.
Governor Akeredolu gave the assurance after signing a peace agreement alongside Eyitayo Jegede of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP, Agboola Ajayi of the Zenith Labour Party ZLP and 7 other candidates participating in the Saturday’s election.
The governor who recalled that previous elections in the state had been peaceful, assured that Saturday’s poll will not be any different.
He therefore urged the people of the state to eschew from violence, adding that he will meet candidates of the PDP and ZLP to discuss how to ensure a peaceful election.
On their part, Jegede of the PDP urged security agencies, especially the Police to arrest and prosecute anyone who foment troubles during the election, while the ZLP candidate Hon Agboola Ajayi who doubles as the deputy governor of the state assured that members of his party will respect the accord signed.
Why the peace accord?
The peace deal signed by no fewer than 10 of the gubernatorial candidates is to prevent violence in the tightly contested elections due for Saturday.
Witnesses of the peace pact signing event were the former head of state and Chairman of the National Peace Committee Abdulsalami Abubakar, the National Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Prof. Yakubu Mahmood; Bishop of Sokoto Diocese Hassan Kukah; Sultan of Sokoto Abukabar Saa’d and former Bishop of Abuja Diocese John Onaiyekan.
Also present were the Chairman of the State Council of Obas, Oba Fredrick Obateru Akinruntan, the Olugbo of Ugbo land, the Deji of Akure, Oba Aladelusi Aladetoyinbo other traditional rules and religious leaders across the state
