Opposition party in Ghana, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is demanding the resignation of Dr. Ernest Addison, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), along with his deputies, in light of alleged financial mismanagement.
The NDC has issued a 21-day ultimatum, threatening to mobilize supporters to the BoG premises to force the resignations should they not occur within the given timeframe.
During the 2022 fiscal year, the Bank of Ghana experienced a substantial loss of GH¢60.8 billion, prompting allegations of mismanagement by the NDC.
Addressing journalists as part of the NDC’s “Moment of Truth” series on Tuesday, Ato Forson, the Minority Leader, accused the Central Bank Governor of mishandling BoG’s affairs, leading to the necessity of an IMF bailout.
“In this regard, we call for the resignation of the Governor of the Central Bank and his deputies within 21 days from today.”
‘‘We vow to take popular action to occupy the Bank of Ghana if the demanded resignations do not occur within 21days.
“The March to Ensure Accountability will begin in 21 days if the Governor of the Bank of Ghana does not do the needful and pack bag and baggage out of that sacred institution that he has so desecrated. Dr. Ernest Addisson Must Go! There has to be an end to impunity and it is NOW!” he said.
The party stated that the Bank of Ghana’s management has steered the institution onto a perilous course, maintain that it is a “crime scene” and criticized the recklessness and ineptitude of the Governor and his team.
The NDC also accused the BoG of lavish spending, claiming that GHS97.4 million was allocated to foreign and domestic travel, representing a staggering 246% increase compared to the previous year.
