After being cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic which held the world to a standstill, the organisers of Wimbledon have announced that the Grand Slam tournament will be staged behind closed door.
Wimbledon was the only one of the four Grand Slams to be cancelled in 2020 with the Australian Open taking place before the virus spread across the world and the French Open electing to delay and hold the tournament in the autumn.
It was the first time the grass-court championships were canceled since World War II.
According to the organizers, the championships would fall into three different categories: a full capacity Championships, a reduced capacity Championships, and a ‘behind closed doors’ Championships, all of which are dependent on the status of government and public health guidelines.
Also, the All England Lawn Tennis Club – organizers noted that the health and safety of all stakeholders, guest, staff and competitors will not be handled with kid gloves as everything have been put in place to work closely with the relevant government and public health authorities.
The 134th championships will be staged from June 28 to July 11, 2021.
