The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has banned actor Will Smith, from attending any academy event or program, including the Oscars, virtually or in person, for 10 years.
This disciplinary decision comes after the viral moment at the 2022 Oscars, when Smith walked on stage and slapped comedian Chris Rock for a joke he had made about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.
“Today, the Board of Governors convened a meeting to discuss how best to respond to Will Smith’s actions at the Oscars, in addition to accepting his resignation,” the academy said in an open letter.
“The Board has decided, for a period of 10 years from April 8, 2022, Mr. Smith shall not be permitted to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or virtually, including but not limited to the Academy Awards,” the organization added.
In a statement, Smith said: “I accept and respect the Academy’s decision.”
