Former coach of Nigeria’s U17 men team, Emmanuel Amuneke, has said that Napoli goal wizard, Victor Osimhen, deserves to win the 2023 CAF footballer of the year award.
The prestigious event scheduled for the night of December 11 will be held in Marrakesh, Morocco.
Amuneke who is undoubtedly an African and global football legend, discovered Osimhen and took him to the 2015 FIFA U17 World Cup where the young lad scored 10 historic goals.
The Nigerian serial scorer in Serie A as well as in the Super Eagles is the top pick by most football followers for the continental gong, years after anyone from the country won it since 1999.
Another football legend, Kanu Nwankwo, won it last.
Emmanuel Amuneke, winner of the 1994 edition in an interview with Sports Village Square in Marrakech, said the choice this year may be very complicated wing to the calibre of the three players on the final list, adding, “The three shortlisted players have been able to distinguish themselves.”
Other two players in the final three-man shortlist for the honour are Achraf Hakimi and Mohamed Salah.
“As a Nigerian and as Osimhen’s former coach when he was in the youth team, I will be glad if Osimhen wins,” he said.
