Victor Osimhen marked his return to Napoli’s side with a goal in their 3-1 home win against Bologna, in Sunday’s Serie A fixture.
Osimhen missed Napoli’s last three games after he was rushed to hospital following a collision with an Atalanta player last month.
Napoli started the game impressively and with only eight minutes into the encounter, opened the scoring through Lorenzo Insigne.
The former Lille striker was introduced for Dries Mertens in the 53rd minute and wasted no time to announce himself in the encounter.
Roberto Soriano reduced the deficit for Bologna in the 73rd minute. However, Insigne sealed the victory for Gennaro Gattuso’s men three minutes later to complete a brace.
Osimhen has now scored three goals in the Italian too-flight this season. His last goal in the league was on 8th November 2020.
The 22-year-old has had a torrid time with injuries and COVID-19 but Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr had thrown his weight behind his front man, noting his real value would be seen within a short time.
“I spoke with the boy and he told me that he is physically and mentally fine. He is ready to return to the field with Napoli and also with the national team.
You will soon see his real value. In the national team he is our point of reference for the attack, he has collected an important legacy in that role from Odion Ighalo. In the next qualifying matches for the African Cup we hope to find him with great energy.
“Napoli are a great team but have been unlucky this season. (Gennaro) Gattuso is a good coach and Victor told me he trusts him a lot and what he’s teaching him.”
With the result, Napoli occupy sixth place on 47 points in the Serie A table.
