Victor Osimhen has become Nigeria’s 2nd top scorer in the Italian Serie A in a single season after surpassing Obafemi Martins’ goal haul on Sunday.
The Nigerian provided an assist and scored a goal as his title-chasing Napoli suffered a 3-2 home loss to Fiorentina on Sunday.
Heading into the crucial encounter, Osimhen was joint 2nd Nigerian top scorer in a single season in Serie A with Obafemi Martins, but the 23-year-old striker scored a great goal to take his tally above the former Inter Milan striker on the list.
Osimhen controlled a long ball with his chest away from Fiorentina defender Igor before firing home his side’s second of the game.
It was Osimhen’s 12th league goal of the season surpassing Obafemi Martins’ record of 11 set in 2004-2005 season with Inter Milan but Simy Nwankwo’s 20 hauls scored last season is still the highest.
The lanky striker scored 20 league goals for Crotone in the Serie A last season.
Osimhen is also the first Nigerian to score double figures in two consecutive Serie A seasons having scored 10 last season and 12 so far this season.
Prior to the game, Osimhen was rewarded with his Serie A player of the month. The Nigerian international scored four goals in three games to clinch the award for the month of March.
