Germany’s coach, Joachim Low could be heading for the exit door sooner than expected after his side were outwitted by fellow European giants Spain in an embarrassing 6 – 0 defeat at Seville on Wednesday night.
This happens to be Germany’s heaviest defeat in a competitive fixture. What a night it was for Die Mannschaft!
Meanwhile, there was more to the humiliation when exiled international, Mesut Ozil took a swipe at his old boss.
Ozil’s career has suffered some serious setbacks in recent years at both club and country level.
The 32 –year –old walked away from the German squad in 2018 on the basis of discriminatory remarks in the wake of his much publicised meeting with the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
Other players who were part of the German World Cup winning team in 2014 seemed to have fallen out of Low’s favour following Ozil’s decision.
In the aftermath, of Germany’s debacle at the 2018 tournament, Joachim Löw had confirmed that the likes of Thomas Muller, Jerome Boateng and Mats Hummels will no longer make up his plans in the team.
Thus, Low was quoted, “Now it’s time to set the course for the future,” he said at the time.
“We want to give the team a new look. I am convinced that this is the right step. The youngsters coming through will have the room they need to grow. Now it’s up to them to take on responsibility.”
Germany arrived in Seville having kept just once clean sheet since last November. A porous backline was soon exposed by Spain’s ruthless front three.
The 32-year-old could not hide what seemed like a mockery as he took to his twitter to make a spoof of his former boss:
“Time to take Jerome Boateng Back #ESPGER”
However, Ozil’s comment looks pretty much superfluous as Bayern Munich do not see a future with the 32 year centre-back whose contract expires at the end of the season.
While it looks not so good to dismiss Ozil’s point as a mere gibe, Boateng’s return could add a little bit of experience in Germany’s defence.
