It appears Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo still do have a long way to go on smashing Pele’s goal scoring after the unbelievable was done to the Brazilian legend Instagram bio moments after Ronaldo surpassed his feat.
Pele, whose initial record reportedly stood at 757 updated his Instagram bio to Leading Goal Scorer of All Time (1,283) after the Portuguese’s brace against Udinese in the Serie A took his tally to 758–one ahead of the 80-year-old.
However, it is believed that Pele scored over 1000 goals – but that includes goals from friendlies, tour matches and from his time in the army.
Prior to the latest development, Brazilian club Santos had come out to debunk reports suggesting Messi had overtaken the World Cup winner’s goal record for a single club after the Argentine netted his 644th goal for Barcelona last December.
“In the last few days, there has been a lot of talk in the media and on social media about how many goals Pele scored in a Santos shirt,” the club posted on its Instagram handle. “According to some statistics, the Argentine Lionel Messi (Barcelona) became the player with the most goals for a single club, when he scored 644 for the Catalans, excluding friendlies — which some call official goals.”
“However, part of the media report the total, while excluding the best record of all: the total number of goals for the clubs. Pele scored 1,091 for Santos,” it read.
But current scenario has drawn heavy criticism from fans on social media as they berated Pele for updating his tally and not respecting Ronaldo’s unbelievable feat.
