The Premier League on Saturday confirmed that Sheffield United have been relegated after they suffered a devastating 5-1 defeat in the hands of Newcastle United.
Confirming the latest development via its X platform, the League body wrote, “Following their defeat to Newcastle, Sheffield Utd are relegated pending Everton and Nott’m Forest’s points-deduction appeals.”
Sheffield United recorded only 16 points in the 2023/2024 season winning just three of all the 34 fixtures played by the club this season.
So, the defeat leaves the Blades 10 points adrift of safety with only three games remaining, while Newcastle stay seventh and are well placed to secure a spot in Europe next season.
Newcastle have scored 13 league goals against the Blades this season – the most one team has registered against another in a single Premier League campaign.
Newcastle are now four points clear of eighth-placed West Ham with a game in hand and just a point behind Manchester United in sixth, after the Red Devils conceded a late equaliser at home to Burnley.
Earlier, Liverpool struggled to 2-2 draw against West Ham, frustrating the Reds title target.
Liverpool are still third on the log.
