Bottom-placed side Burnley have been relegated from the Premier League after they suffered a 2-1 defeat against Tottenham on Saturday evening.
The club coached by Vincent Kompany needed a victory in north London to have any chance of taking their survival bid to the last day of the season.
But they couldn’t survive the Spurs onslaught which has now condemned them to the championship.
Five points adrift of fourth-bottom Nottingham Forest with one game left, Burnley join already-relegated Sheffield United in returning to the Championship after last season’s promotion.
Burnley took an unexpected lead against Tottenham with Jacob Bruun Larsen scoring in the 25th minute.
However, Pedro Porro equalised seven minutes later, and Micky van de Ven scored a late winner for Ange Postecoglou’s team.
Kompany, who led Burnley to the Championship title last season, has struggled in the Premier League, winning just five league matches and occupying a relegation zone spot for most of the campaign.
Despite guiding the club to the Championship title in his first season, Kompany’s side has only secured two wins in their last 19 games.
In the other matches decided same day, Bournemouth edged Brentford 2-1, just as Everton beat Sheffield United 1-0.
Newcastle and Brighton ended their encounter 1-1.
Later on, West Ham condemned Luton Town to 3-1 defeat, same way in-form Crystal Palace marched Wolves on the day.
