Paris Saint-Germain Manager, Mauricio Pochettino has explained his decision to substitute Lionel Messi at half time, as his side fought from a goal down to beat Lille 2-1 in the top flight encounter.
Messi has been struggling in Ligue 1 this season, with the 34-year-old yet to register a single league goal, but has impressed in the Champions League, scoring against Manchester City and RB Leipzig at home.
Jonathan David scored for the Lille in the 31st minute and the visitors took the one goal lead into the dressing room before Paris Saint-Germain came back in the second half.
Mauro Icardi was introduced in the second half as Lionel Messi did not make it out to the pitch with Paris Saint-Germain fans were wondering what could have been the reason.
However, Paris Saint-Germain leveled matters in the 74th minute through Marquinhos before Angel Di Maria netted the winner in the 88th minute.
Messi’s inclusion in the squad had come as a surprise owing to the initial concern over his fitness.
According to the report on GOAL, Pochettino explained that Messi was unable to go on against Lille and that was why he substituted the Argentine.
“We have to wait. We spoke with the doctor. It’s a precaution. He couldn’t go on, but it’s not a big issue. He will be available for the next game,” the Manager said.
