Manchester United summer signing Edinson Cavani has disclosed that he is unfamiliar with the English customs after the striker was handed a three match ban over an insensitive post.
The English Football Association had also fined the Uruguayan 100,000 pounds ($136,500) and ordered to complete a face-to-face education after admitting to breaching the FA’s rules.
Cavani, who arrived Man Utd this summer, had shared a post he wrote to a friend which he captioned ‘Gracias n******’.
He made the post on November 29 after scoring the match winner in Manchester United’s 3-2 win over Southampton.
The Uruguayan however stated that although he has accepted the three-game ban, he had no intention to offend anyone with his post.
He wrote on Instagram: “Hello everyone, I do not want to extend much in this uncomfortable moment for me. I want to share with you that I accept the disciplinary sanction knowing that I am foreign to English language customs, but I do not share the point of view.
“I apologise if I offended someone with an expression of affection towards a friend, nothing further was my intention. Those who know me know that my effort is to always seek the simplest joy and friendship!
Manchester United have since released a statement on Cavani’s ban, demanding the FA’s full written reasons for imposing the ban so that it is clear the striker is not racist.
The 33-year-old will now miss Manchester United’s next three matches as he was out of action in their 2-1 win over Aston Villa in the Premier League on New Year’s Day.
